Center of the First Position of the Portuguese Army

600 years ago, this was the first place chosen by Nuno Álvares Pereira to halt the advance of the Castilian army.

500 meters from the Monastery of Batalha, 1.5 km from the main building, stands a unique building. 600 years ago, this was the first place chosen by Nuno Álvares Pereira to halt the advance of the Castilian army. Considered an impregnable position, the Castilians did not want to fight in this place and they continued their march. They would meet the Portuguese army hours later in the plateau of São Jorge where they would be defeated.

Whoever visits the Interpretation Center of the First Portuguese Position discovers a panoramic view over the Monastery of Batalha. Through the exhibition contents you will have the experience of a bird flight that will take you inside the construction of one of the most emblematic medieval buildings, a jewel of Gothic architecture in Portugal and a World Heritage Site.
